Vice President & General Counsel
Chris Gear has assumed an expanded role this season at CS&E, adding hockey operations responsibilities to his other legal and management duties as Vice President & General Counsel. Gear first joined the organization in July, 2010. In this expanded role, Gear works closely with Jonathan Wall, Director of Hockey Operations & Analytics, on the legal application of the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement, salary cap management, player transactions and contracts.
In addition to his work with the hockey operations department, Gear is also responsible for overseeing all legal matters relating to the Canucks business and event operations. This includes sponsorship, broadcast, technology, event licensing and supplier negotiations. It also includes advising the organization on legal and contractual requirements as well as compliance and risk management matters.
Prior to joining the Canucks, Gear spent five years as Director and Senior Legal Counsel for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). Gear began his legal career at the Vancouver office of the law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP where he worked for six years after graduating from Queen’s University with his Bachelor of Commerce in 1995 and LL.B. in 1998. While at Queen’s, Gear was a CIS all-star receiver and team MVP with the Golden Gaels football team. His athletic pursuits are now confined to “beer league hockey” and coaching youth soccer.
